Sunday Shorts: Pro-Cycling Season Over, Cavendish To Rabobank?, Armstrong Saga, No Tour For Cancellara? Dick Pounds Attacks UCI, The Hog Quits...

The week has been dominated, as suspected, by Lance Armstrong and everything that entails but I can assure you that other things have been going on in cycling. Here is a round up of all the latest news and gossip in the world of professional cycling...

2012 Season Ends
The WorldTour season came to an end yesterday as riders completed the Tour of Beijing, won for the second time running by a 'post Worlds' in form Tony Martin (OPQS). Martin's decisive Stage 2 move pretty much sealed overall victory in Beijing though Ryder Hesjedal and Samuel Sanchez tried to thwart Martin in the closing stage. Brit Steve Cummings (BMC) took the final stage victory to round at a great year for British cycling.

Cavendish To Rabobank?
Sounds silly doesn't it? Doesn't it? Well maybe it's not that silly...It appears that a deal with OPQS isn't as far down the line as we all though, with Patrick Lefevere this week ruling out any 'rider exchange' with Sky to secure Mark Cavendish for 2013. This coupled with rumblings (I have heard rumblings, though the Source is fuzzy) that Cavendish will not be going to the team 'everybody thinks he's going to' and in fact a deal has already been done at Rabobank during the World Championships means the rumours continue. Rabo's roster looks full but with Barredo's passport troubles that might not be the case for long. Though Rabobank are, in a roundabout way, a Dutch development squad, with the GC guys lacking victories such as Gesink, Mollema etc and Theo Bos not exactly dominating the sprints signing Cavendish would bring some good press and a whole lot of wins. Of course old pal and lead-out man Renshaw is already there and Cavendish was recently spotted with Rabobank queen Vos doing a Q&A with junior riders and significant sponsors have announced extensions in the last few weeks...

Armstrong Saga
Armstrong has obviously been watching too much Jeremy Kyle as his lawyer hints that Lance Armstrong may look to do a 'lie detector test' in the not too distant future. Maybe he should ask Pat and Hein to conduct the test - it's worked for him so far...

Dick Pound Attacks UCI
Former WADA boss Dick Pound says of the UCI and Doping:
“It is not credible that they didn’t know this was going on, I had been complaining to UCI for years. They can’t be so blind to not know this was going on.” He also accuses the UCI of rigging the whole testing procedure to ensure riders are still able to dope and pass tests: “The race starts at 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the afternoon and there are no tests prior to the race to see if they are bumped up, There was then an unchaperoned hour before further tests. So then you go in and get saline solutions and other means of hiding the effects (of) EPO and whatever else it is. You have to say, ‘I wonder if it was designed not to be successful?’” Watch out Dick, I'm pretty sure the UCI will be writing to inform you of their intentions to Sue you shortly...

The Hog Quits
Cycling has something to celebrate this week as Johan Bruyneel announces he will be stepping down at Radioshack-Nissan Trek. Bruyneel was mentioned in over 120 pages of the 200 page summary document issued by the USADA with regards to the Armstrong and US Postal doping case. Good Riddance Johan, you certainly will not be missed...

Fabian Cancellara May Not Ride 2013 Tour
2012 hasn't exactly been a vintage year for Spartacus who's form has seemed a little off the boil ever since missing the cobbled classics through injury. Sleepless nights with a new born baby may also be to blame. Imagining the 100th anniversary Tour without Cancellara does however almost bring a tear to my eye but Fabian as adamant he wants to 'get back to basics'. Cancellara says he 'just wants to be a rider' next season. “In the first place I am going for Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. The Tour... I think I could even skip it." adding “I don't want to be like Wiggins and Jurgen Van den Broeck and sacrifice everything for the Tour. I want a different life. I am not only a rider but also a family man. I even think that I could skip the next Tour, especially now that here is no prologue. What do I have to prove? Perhaps it is more interesting to take a break then to prepare for the second part of the season.” That final statement maybe a hint that he will be out to grab Tony Martins World Time Trial Champions jersey which would make for an interesting end to the season...
